How can I automatically pre-translate the trademark symbol?

Created on 08th October 2015 at 12:31 by Jamie O'Connell

The one2edit™ translation memory does not retain local styling. Therefore, any local styling will need to be manually re-applied after a one2edit pre-translation process. For example, if a trademark symbol is created by styling the letters 'TM' as superscript, the superscript styling will need to be re-applied after a pre-translation process.

It is possible, however, to ensure that text containing a trademark symbol is automatically sent for review after a pre-translation process.

1. Use the specific trademark symbol

There is a purpose-made trademark symbol that can be used. Because this character is a specific character (and not just the letters 'TM' restyled), then it is saved in the one2edit™ translation memory 'as is'.

This symbol can be inserted via the 'Glyphs' panel in Adobe® InDesign® desktop, or it can be written into a master document source text via the one2edit™ 'Glyphs' panel (as shown).

  1. Open the 'Glyphs' panel, click the 'Insert Character Menu' and follow the path 'Insert Special Character > Symbols > Trademark Symbol'.
  2. The 'Trademark Symbol' appears at the cursor position in the 'Text Editor'.
  3. You can now render your changes in the document preview.

NOTE:
It is also possible to use 'Alt+Shift+2' in OSX to type this character.

2. Create a GREP style

A GREP style can be created in InDesign to automatically style the letters 'TM' as superscript. Because the GREP style is a part of the paragraph style, no manual local styling is required. This means that the text will be automatically marked as 'translated' when the pre-translation has completed.

For more information about GREP styles and how to create them, please see Adobe's help pages.

NOTE:
Keep in mind that a GREP style will be applied to all text that fits the pattern.
