Why do my Frame Rules not allow me to edit Frames?

Created on 17th September 2026 at 15:34 by Olaf Walther

Frame Rules enable users to manually move and resize frames in a job.

However, there are cases where a frame cannot be manually resized:

  • If the text frame is set up to auto-size based on the content.
  • If the frame content is not in the Content Group.

Check if Auto-Sizing is enabled for the Frame

If the frame size is being controlled by Adobe® InDesign®, then the user cannot manually resize the frame.

You can check this setting in the source-language document in the one2edit™ Editor, or using InDesign Desktop.

one2edit™:

  1. Click the top-right corner of the frame and choose Text Frame Options from the frame menu.
  2. Check if Auto-Sizing is set to anything other than Off.

InDesign:

  1. Right-click on the frame, and choose Text Frame Options... from the context menu.
  2. Check if Auto-Sizing is set to anything other than Off.

The Auto-Sizing option must be set to Off to allow manual editing.

NOTE: This only applies to text frames. Graphic/image frames do not have an auto-size option.

Check if the Frame Content is in the Job

The controls in one2edit™ mean that only items in the Content Group can be edited.

Therefore, users may only edit frames if they can also edit the content within that frame. This ensures that users may only edit frames containing content which has been released for editing.
