What happens if a Font is missing?

Created on 10th June 2026 at 13:15 by Jamie O'Connell

The fonts used for text in InDesign® files are rendered by Adobe® InDesign® Server. These fonts will, therefore, need to be uploaded by the user to their one2edit™ system.

This lesson shows what happens if fonts have not been uploaded or are otherwise missing from a one2edit™ project.

NOTE: If fonts are missing, PDF exports will also contain the incorrect font face because InDesign Server will be unable to find the font.

NOTE: Adobe® has stated that the Adobe Fonts licensing is not compatible with an Adobe® InDesign® Server installation. Licenses for any fonts that you want to install on your one2edit™ system must be purchased directly from the font foundry, or from the foundry's authorized reseller(s). For more information, please see the following link on the Adobe website: https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/font-licensing.html#server

What happens when Fonts are missing?

  1. If fonts are missing, then that text will be rendered using a default system font. This font will most likely have a different font face, and may result in overset text.
  2. When the font is available for the document, the text will be rendered correctly.

NOTE: InDesign Server will attempt to render all text, even if the font is missing. However, if the default system font does not contain all of the necessary characters, you may see missing-character symbols in your text.

Check for missing Fonts

Open the Project Details dialog by clicking Properties in the document's context menu, or by clicking the thumbnail to the left of the document.

  1. Select the Fonts tab.
  2. If any fonts have a missing-font symbol beside them, then InDesign Server is unable to find those fonts.
  3. Fonts are checked when a project is linked. If you uploaded font packages (or font files to a Document fonts folder) after linking the project, then you may need to click the Validate button to refresh this view.

NOTE: The Validate button is only used to refresh this view. You are not required to click Validate for InDesign Server to make use of available fonts. In other words, if fonts were missing initially, and then you uploaded them, InDesign Server will use the fonts even if you have not clicked Validate.

NOTE: Fonts required for target languages may not yet be listed for the source-language document. Please be aware of the need to create styles for target languages in the original source document (i.e. styles that will select the correct font and fitting options for those languages).

NOTE: You can upload a font package (i.e. a zip archive file containing font files) via Settings > Font Packages in the main navigation menu. If you have created an InDesign Package, then all required font files should be located in its Document fonts folder. Please refer to other lessons in this Knowledge Base regarding setting the font source for a project.
