What happens if I change the Segmentation of the Source Text?

Created on 10th June 2026 at 13:14 by Jamie O'Connell

Changing the segmentation in a source-language document will cause some or all of the translations in all version documents to be undone (i.e. reset to the source language).

Therefore, you must be very careful when changing the segmentation of a document while translation jobs are in progress. It is not possible to undo segmentation changes and restore the target-language documents to their previous states.

Therefore, text segmentation (i.e. to match the translation units in your translation memory) should be done at the start of a project, before the translation jobs are started.

NOTE: This holds true even if the same Segmentation Rules as before are reapplied.

In-Progress Translation Jobs

In order to preserve the integrity of the translations, there needs to be a 1:1 relationship between the segments in the source-language document, and the segments in the target-language documents.

Therefore, changing the segmentation in the source-language document will also change the segmentation any target-language documents.

If those target-language Version Documents have running workflows, changing the source-language segmentation could undo some or all of the work that has been done in those jobs to date.

Changing the segmentation will reset segments

  1. If you change the segmentation of text in the document, all segments may be reset in the language versions (even if the job is 100% complete).
  2. Merging or re-segmenting specific segments in the master document will reset the text of those segments in the language versions .
  3. Segmentation of text can also be changed via the Split Tool in the text editor.

NOTE: Even if you apply identical segmentation rules to the document (i.e. the same rules that were applied before any jobs were started), the edits/translations will be reset. Therefore, all segmentation should be completed before any translation jobs are started.

NOTE: This is separate from the Default Reset Settings dialog, seen when locking the version documents. Default Reset Settings only apply to content changes, not changes made to the segmentation.
