How to check the styling in your Text Rules

Created on 29th January 2018 at 12:59 by Jamie O'Connell

The replacement text in a Text Rule can be styled using character styles or style overrides.

This lesson explains how to check what styles are applied to which characters in your replacement text.

Select characters or place cursor between blue square brackets

Because all styling within a Text Rule is character-based, you must manually place the focus on the desired characters in order to see the applied styling.

In this example, we can see that there are 3 styles applied to the replacement text, and only two of those are represented with blue square brackets.

We would need to place the focus in each of these styled portions of the replacement text individually, and then check which styling options are applied to each.

Example: Check first word

  1. Place the cursor between the blue brackets.
  2. We can see that this word is styled using a character style named 'First word style'.

NOTE:
Both character styles and style overrides can be applied to the same selection of characters, so you may need to also look in the 'overrides' area.

Example: Check second word

  1. Place the cursor in the second word.
  2. We can see that this word is styled using an 'all caps' style override.

NOTE:
No blue brackets are shown in this case, because the entirety of the style overrides can be displayed visually (i.e. all letters are in upper case).

Example: Check third word

  1. Place the cursor between the blue brackets.
  2. We can see that this word is styled using style overrides of tracking, kerning, and skew.

NOTE:
Blue brackets are shown in this case, because the style overrides cannot be displayed visually.
