1. 'New'

1. 'New'

Clicking the 'New' button displays a drop down menu.

  1. New Folder: Folders are used to sort your rule sets. Folders will be displayed in the folder area on the left.
  2. New Text Rule Set: Rule sets are shown in the 'Text Rules Sets' area.
  3. New Text Rule: Text Rules are listed in the 'Text Rules' area. There can be multiple rules in a rule set.

  1. Text: The Text Rules from the selected Text Rule Sets are applied to any words typed in here.
  2. Text Rules Sets: The selected Text Rule Sets are shown here (more than one can be selected at a time for testing).
  3. Result: This displays the final result of the applied Text Rules.
  4. Applied Text Rules: A list of the text rules that have been applied to read the above result.

NOTE:

The 'Test' button is only active when a Text Rule Set is selected, not a specific Text Rule or folder.

3. Edit (Folder)

3. Edit (Folder)

Clicking the 'Edit' button while a folder is selected opens the 'Folder Details' window.

  1. ID: The ID of the folder.
  2. Created/Modified: The timestamps for when the folder was created and last modified.
  3. Name: The name of the folder can be modified.
  4. Permissions: The access permissions for the folder can be set via the 'Permissions' tab.

3. Edit (Text Rule Set)

3. Edit (Text Rule Set)

Clicking the 'Edit' button while a Text Rule Set is selected opens the 'Text Rule Set Details' window.

  1. ID: The ID of the Text Rule Set.
  2. Created/Modified: The timestamps for when the Text Rule Set was created and last modified.
  3. Name: The name of the rule set can be modified.
  4. Application Default: The rules in this rule set can be set to 'Enforce' or 'Suggest'. An 'Enforce' rule set will automatically apply all rules from the set, while a 'Suggest' rule set will underline the potential matches in blue.

NOTE:

Please refer to the knowledge base lessons about using Text Rules for more information about 'Enforce' and 'Suggest'.

3. Edit (Text Rule)

3. Edit (Text Rule)

Clicking the 'Edit' button while a Text Rule is selected opens the 'Text Rule Details' window.

  1. ID: The ID of the Text Rule.
  2. Created/Modified: The timestamps for when the Text Rule was created and last modified.
  3. Name: The name of the Text Rule can be changed here.
  4. Description: A description of the Text Rule can be added here.
  5. Example: An example of this Text Rule in action can be shown here. Type the 'find what' text into the left window, and the Text Rule will be applied to it in the right window.
  6. Language: A Text Rule may be specified as only applying in certain hyphenation languages. If the 'Only match specific hyphenation languages' box is not checked, the rule will be applied for documents in all hyphenation languages.
  7. Find What: Define the text that will be matched by this Text Rule.
  8. Ignore Case: Case insensitivity may be switched on for the match.
  9. Use regex: A pattern may be defined using a regular expression instead of plain text.
  10. Treat Spaces Equally: All types of spaces are treated as equal. If this is not enabled, then two different types of whitespace character (e.g. non-breaking space and normal whitespace) would give two separate matches.
  11. Treat Hyphens Equally: All types of hyphens are treated as one. If this is not enabled, then two different types of hyphen (e.g. m-dash and n-dash) would give two separate matches.
  12. Replace With: This is where the replacement text is defined (i.e. the text with which the 'find what' text will be replaced). Micro-typography and styling may be applied to this replacement text via the 'Text Formats' and 'Glyphs' sections (described below).
  13. Text Formats: Text styling can be applied to the 'Replacement Text' using these tools.
  14. Glyphs: Glyphs may be inserted into the 'Replacement Text' using these tools.

NOTE:

If you are seeing an infinite loop of Text Rules being applied to your text, you may need to switch on the options for 'Treat spaces equally' and/or 'Treat hyphens equally'.

NOTE:

A 'hyphenation language' is potentially different to a target language. For example, there is no specific 'German (Austria)' hyphenation language. The list of hyphenation languages is provided by InDesign Server.
