Text Rule Sets: 'Enforce' and 'Suggest'

Created on 09th December 2016 at 13:26 by Jamie O'Connell

When creating Text Rules, you must decide whether the rules should be enforced upon the user or just suggested as an option.

When creating a Text Rule Set, you are asked to define if the Text Rules within this set will be enforced or suggested by default.

NOTE:

This setting can be overridden when applying the Text Rule Set to your project, Content Group, or text segment.

'Enforced' Text Rules

'Enforced' Text Rules

When Text Rules are 'enforced', the rule will be executed automatically when a match is found.

In this example, the word 'orange' is automatically expanded to 'Orange^Fizz'.

NOTE:

'Enforced' Text Rules will not be applied until changes have been made to the segment (i.e. either by editing the text directly or importing a translation file). If no text change has been made, an 'enforced' Text Rule will show up as 'suggested' in the both the editor and the 'Spelling' panel.

'Suggested' Text Rules

'Suggested' Text Rules

When Text Rules are 'suggested', the matching word/phrase is underlined in blue. The Text Rule may then be chosen from a drop-down menu.

If multiple rules are matched, then multiple rules will be suggested.

NOTE:

It is important to give your Text Rules meaningful names, so that editors/translators will know which Text Rules to apply in the document.

'Suggested' Text Rules are shown in the 'Spelling' panel

Any Text Rules that are 'suggested' (or 'enforced' Text Rules that have not yet been applied because changes have not been made to the segment) will be shown as blue in the 'Spelling' panel.

Spelling errors, on the other hand, are shown in red.

Double clicking on either of these will bring you to the affected segment.

Overriding the default 'Enforce/Suggest' setting

When adding a Text Rule Set to a project, Content Group or segment, there is a checkbox.

If this checkbox is checked, the Text Rules from that set will be 'enforced'. If the box is not checked, then the Text Rules will be 'suggested' to the editor.

The state of this checkbox will default to the option chosen when creating the set of Text Rules (i.e. 'enforced' or 'suggested').

NOTE:

If the Text Rule Set area is not editable, you will need to uncheck the 'Inherit settings' box above.
