Editing Text - using Glyphs

Created on 08th December 2016 at 17:55 by Jamie O'Connell

When editing text, you might need to input symbols that are not on your keyboard.

This lesson shows you how to insert these kinds of glyphs into text segments.

Select a Text Segment

As soon as you click on an editable text segment, the 'Text Edit' window (1) opens.

At the same time, the 'Segment Panels' become available (2).

Insert Glyph from 'Glyphs Panel'

(1) Open the 'Glyphs Panel'

Click on the 'Glyphs' icon to open the 'Glyphs Panel'.

(2) Choose a glyph from the panel

There are several glyph subsets available. Browse these and choose the symbol you need.

(3) Drag & Drop

Select the symbol you need, and drag and drop it into the appropriate position in your 'Text Edit' window.

NOTE:

You can also double-click on a glyph to place it at the current cursor position.

Apply changes

Click the 'Apply' button to render your changes in the document.

NOTE: The Glyph needs to be present in the font!

The Glyphs Panel contains all possible glyphs (letterforms) and symbols. These will always show up correctly in the 'Text Editor' window, regardless of the font used in the document.

However, in order for a glyph to render correctly within the document, it obviously has to be present in the font being used.

If the selected glyph (1) is NOT present in the font, a 'missing character' symbol will be displayed (2) in the document when the 'Apply' button is clicked.

Different fonts can be set up using paragraph and/or character styles. This would allow editors and translators to select a font that does contain all appropriate characters and symbols.

Save changes

Use the diskette icon to save your changes at any time, or choose to save your changes when exiting the 'Job Editor'.
