'Segmentation Rules' window

Created on 18th January 2013 at 18:56 by Jamie O'Connell

Segmentation involves partitioning InDesign® stories into smaller segments, usually for translation purposes.

By default, text is segmented into paragraphs when a one2edit™ project is created. There are, however, also default segmentation rules included that segment the text into sentences. These rules may be customized, depending on your project requirements.

Segmentation rules are sets of regular expressions (regex) that can be applied to specific languages. Regular expressions are a standard way to 'match' strings of text.

You can find out more about them online: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_expression

A rule will consist of 'before' and 'after' patterns, as well as a 'break' command.

  • If a 'break' command is marked, a segmentation break will appear wherever the 'before' text pattern is followed by the 'after' text pattern.
  • If a 'break' command is NOT marked, it is like putting in an exception to the above, so a segmentation break will NOT appear for those particular patterns.

For example, if we wanted to segment our text into sentences, we would like a segmentation break to occur after a full-stop/period - patterns marked WITH a break. However, we would not like a segmentation break to occur after an abbreviation, which also uses a full-stop/period as a marker - patterns marked WITHOUT a break.

Click 'Settings > Segmentation Rules'

Click on the 'Segmentation Rules' option in the 'Settings' menu.

'Segmentation Rules' window

There will be a default set of segmentation rules bundled with the workspace.

These rules will segment selected content into sentence-length segments.
