Create an empty Dictionary

Created on 26th March 2024 at 12:47 by Jamie O'Connell

You can create an empty dictionary for use with the editor spellcheck. After creating the dictionary, you will need to add your own words one at a time via the Learned Words tab.

NOTE: Dictionaries created in this way do not contain any content for the spellcheck to use. If you wish to create a populated dictionary, either add the default InDesign dictionaries, or import a custom Hunspell-format dictionary.

Open the Dictionaries Dialog

Open the Dictionaries dialog via Settings > Dictionaries in the navigation menu.

Create a New Dictionary

Click New Dictionary in the action menu.

Define the Dictionary

When the New Dictionary dialog opens, English: USA is selected by default.

  1. Choose the language for your dictionary from the menu.
  2. The selected language is automatically displayed as the dictionary name. You can edit the Name and Description as required.
  3. Click Save.

NOTE: The list of languages in the drop-down is limited to the hyphenation languages (and, therefore, dictionaries) supported by InDesign. If you wish to create dictionaries for languages not in this list, please see the article on importing custom dictionaries.

NOTE: The Learned Words tab is not available until the dictionary has been created by clicking Save or Apply.

NOTE: While it is possible to create multiple dictionaries for the same language, they won't all be used at once. The first dictionary in the list will be used automatically by the spellcheck, but you can manually select another to be used while editing.
