Default InDesign Dictionaries

Created on 26th March 2024 at 12:32 by Jamie O'Connell

By default, the dictionaries included with InDesign are already present in your Workspace.

It is possible, however, to delete dictionaries. This lesson is about how to add default dictionaries back to your Workspace, if required.

NOTE: The default InDesign dictionaries are not exhaustive, and many possible languages are not included. Hunspell-format dictionaries can be found on the internet and imported as custom dictionaries.

Dictionaries Dialog

Open the Dictionaries dialog by clicking Settings > Dictionaries in the navigation menu.

NOTE: Here we can see that the default InDesign dictionaries are already present.

Default Dictionaries

Choose Default Dictionaries from the action menu to add any missing default InDesign dictionaries.

NOTE: It is possible to have multiple dictionaries for a single language code installed. However, if an existing custom dictionary has the same name as a default dictionary, then the default dictionary of that name will not be added.
