Content Rules: Image Replacement & Editing

Created on 25th March 2024 at 16:16 by Jamie O'Connell

The Image > Edit options of a Content Rule define how users may edit and/or replace editable images.

NOTE: If no image-editing Content Rules are assigned, then images cannot be edited in the Job Editor.

NOTE: These rules apply only to the images within frames. If you wish to permit the editing of the frames themselves, you must define Frame Rules.

Image > Edit

The options available under Image > Edit are:

  • Replace: Permit the replacement of editable images. Can specify folders from which the user can choose replacement images.
  • Replace > Upload: Permit the user to upload their own replacement images. Can specify permitted file types and sizes.
  • Fitting Restrictions: Choose if the image must fill the frame or cannot be cropped by the frame. Can also choose to not allow cropping of a safe area.
  • Move: Permit the image to be moved.
  • Resize: Permit the image to be resized.
  • Resize > Aspect Ratio: Force the aspect ratio of an image to be maintained (or not) during resizing.
  • Resize > Min. Scale: Set the minimum scaling percentage for the image.
  • Resize > Max. Scale: Set the maximum scaling percentage for the image.
  • Rotate: Permit the image to be rotated. Can also set limits on the permitted angle of rotation.
  • Skew: Permit the image to be skewed.
  • Min. DPI: Set a minimum DPI setting for rasterized images. Changes cannot be applied, if a rescaled or replaced image does not comply with this rule.

NOTE: These rules apply to the image only, not to the image frame. For the editing of image frames, please see the lessons on Frame Rules.

Replace

If users need to replace images in their jobs (e.g. for localization purposes), then this setting should be enabled.

  1. Allow All: If these users do not have access to an asset space (or if you want to limit their access to a specific folder), then you must uncheck Allow All.
  2. Add: Specify a folder from which users can link images by clicking the Add button and choosing a folder from the asset space.
  3. Recursive: Check this if users may also access any sub-folders of the chosen folder.
  4. Upload: Check this if users may also upload their own images to the chosen folder.

Replace > Upload

Users may be permitted to upload their own replacement images to a folder.

  1. Allow All: Uncheck this box to control what users may upload.
  2. Formats: Specify permitted file formats.
  3. Min. File Size: Specify the minimum permitted file size for uploaded images (check the box to enable this option).
  4. Max. File Size: Specify the maximum permitted file size for uploaded images (check the box to enable this option).

NOTE: Users can upload images if the Upload box is checked for the folder chosen under Replace. This option can be used to control what may be uploaded.

NOTE: Because images may be resized in situ, their effective DPI may change. For this reason, there is no DPI setting here. Please use the Min. DPI rule instead.

Fitting Restrictions

If there are specific fitting restrictions that your users must follow when replacing/editing an image, you can set them here by unchecking 'Allow All'.

  • Image must fill frame: The image must be at least 1px ouside every edge of the frame.
  • Image must not be cropped: The image cannot even be 1px outside any edge of the frame.
  • Image safe area must not be cropped: The defined safe area cannot be even 1px outside any edge of the frame.

NOTE: Mutually-exclusive options (i.e. Image must fill frame and Image must not be cropped) should not both be enabled, as it is impossible for a user to adhere to both rules.

NOTE: Allow All means that there are no restrictions on the fitting, which is the same as not checking the Fitting Restrictions option.

Move

If this option is checked, then the user may move the editable image within the frame.

NOTE: The frame itself cannot be moved, unless you have set up Frame Rules for the Job.

Resize > Aspect Ratio

Selecting Maintain forces the aspect ratio of editable images to be maintained during resize.

If Free is selected, then the Maintain Aspect Ratio control is left to the user (it can be enabled/disabled via the Image Editor panel).

NOTE: Selecting Free is equivalent to unchecking the Resize > Aspect Ratio option.

NOTE: Selecting this option enables the resizing of editable images.

Resize > Min. Scale

Use the Min. Scale value to prevent users from making images too small. Uncheck Allow All, and set a percentage value set in the Limit field.

NOTE: The Limit value must be between 0-100%.

NOTE: Selecting this option enables the resizing of editable images.

Resize > Max. Scale

Use the Max. Scale value to prevent users from making images too large. Uncheck Allow All, and set a percentage value in the Limit field.

NOTE: The Limit value must be between 100-10,000%.

NOTE: Selecting this option will enable the resizing of editable images.

Rotate

Use the Rotate option if images may be rotated by users. Uncheck Allow All to define permitted rotations for editable images.

Click the Add button to set a rotation rule. Setting multiple rotation rules is permitted.

  • From: Can have a value from -180º to 180º
  • To: Can have a value from -180º to 180º
  • Reference: The rotation values can be set as Relative to the frame rotation or Absolute, depending on your requirements.

NOTE: The image to the bottom-right of the table shows an example of the permitted rotation angles in green.

Skew

If this option is checked, then the user may skew the editable image.

NOTE: The frame itself cannot be skewed, unless you have set up Frame Rules for the Job.

Min. DPI

In a rasterized image, the DPI is related to the size of the image. The effective DPI of the image decreases as the image gets larger.

If your users can resize or replace images, use this option to ensure that an image's effective DPI does not drop below a specific value (e.g. 300dpi for print, 72dpi for screen, etc.) Breaking this rule will revert the image to the previous saved state.

Uncheck Allow All to activate the drop-down menu:

  • Use document setting: Use the DPI setting as defined in the InDesign document.
  • Define value: Specify a minimum DPI value. This limit will be enforced regardless of the document's DPI setting.

NOTE: If a replacement image has a low DPI, it will still be possible to resize it so that it does not break this rule (assuming that your rules also permit resizing images).

NOTE: This rule is only applied to images being edited during a Job. This rule will not check images in the original document, unless those images are subsequently edited during a Job.
