Content Rules: Text Input Restrictions

Created on 15th March 2024 at 17:18 by Jamie O'Connell

The Text > Input options of a Content Rule allow you to define character-input options and limitations for a user.

Text Input options

The options available under Text > Input are:

  • Paragraph character: Permit or prevent paragraph characters from being typed.
  • Newline character: Permit or prevent newline characters from being typed.
  • Number of characters: Set a limit on the number of characters that may be entered into a segment.
  • Character filter: Set or exclude a specific range of characters that may be entered into a segment.

NOTE: None of these input limitations apply to text entered via a translation export/import workflow. These options control the characters entered via the one2edit™ editor only.

Paragraph character

By default, users are not permitted to enter or remove paragraph characters. Pressing Enter will instead input a line-break character (i.e. a soft return or newline character).

If your users should be permitted to add and remove paragraphs in your document, then you will need to explicitly allow that using this Content Rule.

You may also permit or prevent the insertion of text directly after a paragraph character in a segment (if the paragraph character is the last character in the segment).

NOTE: Any text inserted after a paragraph character will appear at the start of the following paragraph, even if the user is not permitted to edit text in the following paragraph.

Newline Character

By default, users may insert and remove Newline characters (a.k.a. line breaks or soft returns).

Using this rule, you may prevent users from inserting and deleting such characters if you wish (if, for example, translators should not make design decisions about line breaks in headlines, etc.).

Number of characters

By default, users may insert as many characters as they require into an editable text segment.

This rule allows you to limit the number of characters that users can type into text segments, by un-checking Allow All and entering a value into the Limit field.

NOTE: This rule may be more useful when applied to specific text segments, rather than to all segments within a Content Group.

NOTE: A greater number of characters than the limit may end up in a segment when importing a translation. In such a case, the reviewer may not be able to edit the text in the segment, and must reduce the number of characters to adhere to this rule.

Character filter

By default, there is no restriction on the characters that a user may enter (other than the paragraph character – see above).

Use this rule to limit the characters that may be typed by a user into the document, by un-checking 'Allow All and choosing an option from the drop-down menu.

  • Numbers: Permit the editor to only add digits.
  • A-Z: Permit the editor to only add Latin letters to the text (accented characters are also not permitted).
  • All except...: Permit the editor to add any characters except those typed into the Value field.
  • Nothing but...: Permit the editor to add only those characters typed into the Value field.

When entering characters into the Value field, simply enter them all as a single string. There is no need to comma-separate the characters.

NOTE: These rules may be more useful when applied to specific text segments, rather than to all segments within a Content Group.

NOTE: Forbidden characters may end up in a segment when importing translations.
