Content Rules: Fitting

Created on 14th March 2024 at 10:42 by Jamie O'Connell

The Text > Fitting options of a Content Rule allow you to permit access to copy-fitting overrides such as tracking, leading, etc.

The user changes these values with a slider, meaning that the limits of the slider can be set according to brand guidelines. This ensures that your users stay within the min and max values of the brand guidelines.

NOTE: These fitting options are also available directly via the Character Panel (i.e. via Text > Styling). However, no limiting controls may be placed on the input fields in the Character Panel.

Fitting Options

  1. The options available under Text > Fitting are:
    • Size: Change the character size (percentage of original size).
    • Leading: Change the space between lines of text (percentage of original spacing).
    • Tracking: Change the character spacing (units). Use this to enhance readability, or to fit more text in a frame.
    • Horizontal scale: Change the width of individual characters (percentage change).
    • Vertical scale: Change the height of individual characters (percentage change).
    • Baseline shift: Raise or lower a character's position relative to the baseline (percentage change).
  2. The Allow All option is selected by default. When checked, this will permit users to use the full length of the slider. If you wish to set minimum and maximum limits on the selection, you must first uncheck this box and enter the relevant values.

Size

This option permits the user to change the size of the text in the selected segment using a slider.

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between 90 and 110 percent.

The maximum limits are 50 to 200 percent.

NOTE: The text size is changed as a percentage. This is because a user may use the same slider for adjusting a headline text (i.e. large text) or a caption (i.e. small text). Therefore, the change must be relative to the original size of the text.

Leading

This permits the user to change the leading of the selected segment using a slider (this may also affect adjacent segments).

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between 90 and 110 percent.

The maximum limits are 50 to 200 percent.

NOTE: The leading is changed as a percentage, relative to the original leading value. If no leading value has been explicitly set for the text, no percentage can be calculated and the slider will be inactive.

Tracking

This permits the user to change the tracking value for text in the selected text segment using a slider.

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between -20 and +20 units.

The maximum limits are -100 to +100 units.

Horizontal Scale

This permits the user to change the horizontal scaling value of selected text using a slider.

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between 90 and 110 percent.

The maximum limits are 50 to 200 percent.

NOTE: The horizontal scaling is changed as a percentage.

Vertical Scale

This permits the user to change the vertical scaling value of selected text using a slider.

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between 90 and 110 percent.

The maximum limits are 50 to 200 percent.

NOTE: The vertical scaling is changed as a percentage.

Baseline Shift

This permits the user to adjust the baseline shift of selected text using a slider.

When Allow All is unchecked, the slider limits are automatically set to between 90 and 110 percent.

The maximum limits are 50 to 200 percent.

NOTE: The baseline shift is changed as a percentage, relative to the original baseline shift value of the selected text. If no baseline shift value has been explicitly set for the text, no percentage can be calculated and the slider will be inactive.
