Content Rules: Paragraph & Character Styles

Created on 12th March 2024 at 12:04 by Jamie O'Connell

The Text > Styles options of a Content Rule allow you to define which Paragraph and/or Character Styles are available to a user.

NOTE: The available styles will be those that exist within the InDesign document.

Text > Styles

  1. The two options available under Text > Styles are:
    • Paragraph: permit users to access and apply some or all of the paragraph styles from the document.
    • Character: permit users to access and apply some or all of the character styles from the document.
  2. The Allow All option is selected by default. When checked, this will permit users to use any of the styles that exist within the document. If you wish to limit what styles can be used by an editor/reviewer, you must first uncheck this box and then enter the relevant criteria.

NOTE: The right-side options pane does not appear until you have selected a rule from the tree.

Paragraph-Style Criteria

You may define which Paragraph Styles your users will have access to by defining one or more criteria.

  1. Define specific Paragraph Styles by setting the criteria for the name of the style.
  2. Define specific style folders that contain the permitted Paragraph Styles.

You may also define a mixture of both folder and style names (e.g. all styles with a name that contains Editor in the folder User Styles).

  1. The + (plus) button enables the addition of multiple criteria, which will combined using AND or OR (as indicated in the dialog).
  2. The X button can be used to remove any criteria you have defined.

Each of the criteria is made up of an operator and some text. The operators work as follows:

  • is: Allow styles whose (folder) name is the text in the input field.
  • is not: Allow styles whose (folder) name is not the text in the input field.
  • contains: Allow styles whose (folder) name contains the text in the input field.
  • does not contain: Allow styles whose (folder) name does not contain the text in the input field.
  • ends with: Allow styles whose (folder) name ends with the text in the input field.
  • does not end with: Allow styles whose (folder) name does not end with the text in the input field.
  • begins with: Allow styles whose (folder) name begins with the text in the input field.
  • does not begin with: Allow styles whose (folder) name does not begin with the text in the input field.
  • Regular expression: Allow styles whose (folder) name matches the regular expression in the input field.

TIP: Access to a folder containing Paragraph Styles specifically for copy-fitting may be granted here.

Character-Style Criteria

You may define which Character Styles your users will have access to by defining one or more criteria.
