How to create Text Rules

Created on 30th January 2024 at 15:46 by Jamie O'Connell

Text Rules are created within Text Rule Sets.

Open the Text Rules dialog

In the Text Rules dialog (opened via Settings > Text Rules):

  1. Select the folder containing your rule set.
  2. Select the Text Rule Set in which the new Text Rule will be saved.
  3. Click the + (plus) Action Button to create a new Text Rule in the selected set. This will open the New Text Rule dialog.

Dialog: New Text Rule

The New Text Rule dialog allows you to define a new rule within your selected rule set.

Create a new Text Rule

  1. Name/Description: Give your new Text Rule a Name, and enter a Description of what it does.
  2. Find What: Insert the text or regular expression that will be matched into the Find What field. Check the Use Regex box if you are matching a regular expression.
  3. Replace With: Put the desired result into the Replace With field.
  4. Example: Once a rule has been defined, typing a match into the left-hand Example field will display the result in the right-hand Example field.
  5. Special InDesign Characters: Special InDesign characters (e.g. non-breaking spaces) can be accessed via this kebab (i.e. three dots) menu.
  6. Save: Click Save to save and close this window.

NOTE: It is advisable to give your Text Rules meaningful names. This will avoid needing to open a Text Rule for editing just to check what it does.

NOTE: Any selected Replace With text can be styled using the Text Formats options below the field. This styling and micro-typography will be applied to any matches in the one2edit editor. Please note that Paragraph Styles cannot be defined here, as the replaced text is often in the middle of a paragraph. Therefore, only Character Styles and overrides may be applied.

NOTE: When formatting the Replace With text, any Character-Style names must exist in the target document (i.e. the name must match exactly). Furthermore, any glyphs entered in the Replace With field must be supported by the fonts and styles available in the target document.

New Text Rule created

Your new Text Rule is now listed within the selected Text Rule Set.
