Setting Frame Rules

Created on 30th June 2023 at 17:50 by Jamie O'Connell

Text and image frames cannot be added to a Content Group and are, therefore, not a part of the workflow. In fact, by default, frame geometry cannot be edited during a one2edit™ Job.

You can permit users to edit frames in a Job by defining Frame Rules for the document. These rules can be set once for all frames in an entire document, or on a frame-by-frame basis.

NOTE: Only frames containing editable Job items (i.e. content that has been added to a Content Group) can be edited by end users.

NOTE: If a frame is set to auto-size, the auto-size dimensions cannot be changed manually (i.e. the same behaviour as in Adobe® InDesign® Desktop).

Set Frame Rules for all Frames in a Document

Click Frame Rules > Document Frame Rules via the option menu for a Spread or a Frame to open the Frame Rules dialog for all frames in the document.

Select how Frames can be edited

From the Add Rule drop-down menu, choose the editing rules for the frames in your document.

  • Allow All - Allow users to edit frames containing editable content in whatever way they wish. This option will add five separate rules.
  • Allow Resize - Allow users to resize frames containing editable content.
  • Allow Resize: Left - Allow users to resize frames containing editable content in the left direction only (i.e. enable the left-hand resize handle only).
  • Allow Resize: Right - Allow users to resize frames containing editable content in the right direction only (i.e. enable the right-hand resize handle only).
  • Allow Resize: Top - Allow users to resize frames containing editable content upwards only (i.e. enable the top resize handle only).
  • Allow Resize: Bottom - Allow users to resize frames containing editable content downwards only (i.e. enable the bottom resize handle only).
  • Allow Move - Allow users to freely move frames containing editable content around the spread.
  • Allow Move: Horizontal - Allow users to move frame containing editable content horizontally on the spread (i.e. no vertical movement is permitted).
  • Allow Move: Vertical - Allow users to move frames containing editable content vertically on the spread (i.e. no horizontal movement is permitted).
  • Allow Scale - Allow users to scale frames and their content, if those frames contain editable content.
  • Allow Scale: Horizontal - Allow users to horizontally scale frames and their content, if those frames contain editable content.
  • Allow Scale: Vertical - Allow users to vertically scale frames and their content, if those frames contain editable content.
  • Allow Rotate - Allow users to freely rotate frames containing editable content.
  • Allow Rotate: To - Allow users to rotate frames containing editable content within certain rotation limits.
  • Allow Skew - Allow users to skew frames and their content, if those frames contain editable content.

NOTE: You can choose any combination of rules from this menu.

NOTE: Choosing Allow All will add five individual rules: Allow Resize, Allow Move, Allow Scale, Allow Rotate, and Allow Skew (as shown below).

A rule can be removed by clicking the X to the right of that rule.

Once you are satisfied with your choices of Frame Rules, click Save (or Apply).

Set Frame Rules for an individual Frame

You can also set Frame Rules for individual frames.

Click Frame Rules > Individual Frame Rules via the option menu for a Frame to open the Frame Rules dialog for that frame.

The Frame Rules – Individual dialog will display the document-level rules that apply to this frame.

Uncheck the Inherit Settings checkbox to make changes and edit/add the rules for your chosen frame. This will override the document-level rules for this frame only.

NOTE: If the Inherit Settings box is unchecked, and all rules are removed, this frame will not be editable in the Job.

Set Frame Rules for all Frames on a chosen Spread

You can also set Frame Rules for all frames on a specific spread of the document.

Click Frame Rules > Individual Frame Rules via the option menu for a spread to open the Frame Rules dialog for the frames on that spread. Then edit the rules as described above.

Override Frame Rules for a Workflow Step

It is possible to override the Frame Rules set in a document for specific steps in the Workflow.

  1. Click the option menu for the Workflow Step.
  2. Choose an override option:
    • Use Settings: This is the default. The Frame Rules will be applied as set up in the document.
    • Allow None: Users at this Workflow Step cannot edit any frames. This overrides all Frame Rules set in the document.
    • Allow All (that contain texts or images): Users at this Workflow Step can freely edit any frames that contain editable content. This overrides any limitations on frame editing set in the document.

Defining individual frame rules for a workflow step can be useful if, for example, a designer/copy-fitter is working at a specific step in the workflow, but no other workflow steps should be permitted to edit frames.
