7. Tables. Lists, Indents, Bullets

Created on 11th April 2017 at 12:20 by Jamie O'Connell

Tab spaces for indentation should be avoided in master documents if possible. Instead, text should be indented via defined paragraph or character styles. This will ensure that one2edit™ users cannot accidentally delete any spacing.

The same is true for bullets. Bullets and numbering can be done automatically using the style settings in InDesign®. Users cannot delete bullets or incorrectly enumerate and indent a list if the style is taking care of it automatically.

Tables are best created using the comprehensive table functions in InDesign. Creating a table in this way (instead of using tabbed paragraphs) makes working in one2edit much easier for users. It also greatly reduces the opportunities for error because it makes the editing job substantially less complex (e.g. no possibility to delete tabs).

Table Styles and Cell Styles can be used in InDesign to make formatting and updating of tabular material quick and painless.

NOTE:
If you must create your own bullets (for whatever reason), using the ‘indent to here’ character will ensure that the user does not need to rely on manually inserting the correct tab-spaces.

Bullets created via styles

It is not possible for the user to accidentally delete the bullets or indents.

Bullets created using bullet characters and tabs

Users in one2edit™ could accidentally delete the bullets and tabs/indents.
