Applying local styling via the Translation panel

Created on 09th June 2023 at 11:34 by Jamie O'Connell

Text in InDesign documents often contain local styling/formatting (i.e. character styles, manual style overrides). This styling must be manually applied to the correct portions of the translated text segment.

Fortunately, you can easily apply local styling to your translated segment using the Pipette tool with the Source Text field of the Translation panel.

Source Text contains local styling

Here we can see that the source text segment contains local formatting. This is indicated by the blue square-brackets in the text.

Specifically, there is one style applied to 121.2 gigawatts and another applied to 1.5%.

Use the Pipette tool to apply Styling

  1. Select the text to which you will apply the formatting.
  2. Click the Pipette tool icon to activate it.

NOTE: The text selection may change from blue to grey when you activate the Pipette tool. This is expected behavior.

  1. With the Pipette tool active, click on the relevant portion of text in the Source Text field of the Translation panel.
  2. The styling is applied to the selected text in the translated segment.

Document updates automatically

The styling change will be automatically rendered in the document.

Repeat these steps for any other locally-styled portions of text in your document.
